“It was better without you,” Mountain Dog rasped when feeding time came. “There was more to go around.”

I didn’t even try to tackle him, to stake a fair claim of the food trough for myself or the others. If he wanted all the slimy raw chicken they threw in tonight, or any other night, he could have it.

My world was getting darker and smaller, I had no doubt now. Most things I had no interest in seeing, and just as well, because most things I couldn’t see properly any more. I lay against the fence. It was my only small sense of boundary, of feeling safe.

I lay on my pallet, and no one could reach me. Not Miss Meg yipping, “Just drink, Bobby, even if you don’t want to eat,” not Spanny, touching a tentative paw to my ears, not Mutt. I bared my teeth to them, and I admit that I nipped Mutt when he tried to drop a piece of meat beside me.

I lay for so long, I have no idea how many more days passed, until Mountain Dog came over again and actually nosed the water bowl to me. “Drink or you’ll die,” he said roughly, then stalked back to the other side of the enclosure.

Without Loni, I didn’t care.
